Panic attacks are a frightening and very sudden experience that makes you feel as if you have a heart attack, lost control, or even died. Most adults experience only 1 or 2 lifetime attacks, but many others are panicked repeatedly, and this may be an indication of the underlying condition called panic disorder. Panic attacks are an intense invasion of fear that comes suddenly for no apparent reason accompanied by very real physical changes, such as heartbeat pounding, sweating, and gasping breath. Here are the steps you can take to stop panic attacks and help prevent attacks from happening again in the future.

Symptoms commonly include:

  • Discomfort or pain in the chest
  • Dizzy or weak
  • Afraid to die
  • Fear of losing control or fear of something bad happening
  • Feeling choking
  • Feel apart from around
  • Feel unreal
  • Nausea or abdominal pain
  • Numbness or tingling in hands, feet, or face
  • Heart palpitations, fast heartbeat or pounding
  • Sweating, cold, or overheating
  • Trembling or body shaking
