Most cases of panic attacks attack without warning and without time, for example when driving a vehicle or are asleep. But over time, the emergence of panic attacks can be anticipated as a result of certain situations.

Some researchers suspect that panic attacks are part of the body's natural defense response when in a threatening situation because it has the same reaction form. But so far there has been no research that can confirm the cause of panic attacks, especially when there is no real cause that triggered the attack.

Several of the following factors are also suspected of contributing to the occurrence of panic attacks that are commonly experienced by late adolescence or early adulthood, namely:

  • Genetic factors or who have a history of panic attacks within the family.
  • Have a history of physical or sexual abuse during childhood.
  • Temperament susceptible to stress or negative emotions.
  • Excessive stress, such as the loss of someone who is very meaningful.
  • Traumatic events, such as sexual violence or serious accidents.
  • Experiencing major changes in life, such as having another child unplanned or the impact of a divorce.
  • Changes or imbalances of substances that affect the functioning of the brain.
  • Smoking or consuming excessive caffeinated beverages.
